George Calmes age 86 of Leesburg died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born August 6, 1926 in Irvine, Kentucky the son of the late George Whitfield and Dixie Lewis Samples Calmes. Mr. Calmes was an educator having served as school principal for the Greeley and Platteville Schools in Colorado and also taught at the Rangeley Elementary School in Colorado, the Waynesville Schools and retired from the Kettering Junior High School in Ohio. He was a member of the State Teachers Retirement Association, the Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity and the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Mr. Calmes had received his Bachelors Degree from the Eastern Kentucky University, his Masters Degree from the Northern Colorado University, where he had also so accomplished his Doctorate work and his Degree in counseling from the University of Dayton. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Jewell Jean Dennison Calmes whom he had married on June 5, 1956 in Lebanon, Ohio, two daughters, Renee´ Denise (James) Kirkman of Centerville, Janine Yvonne (Todd) Henry of Centerville, four grandchildren, Laura Renee´ (Jack) Nehlsen of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Shannon Elizabeth (Tyler) Frydryk of Greensboro, North Carolina, Matthew Richard Henry, serving with the U. S. Navy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Amy Danielle Henry of Centerville, three great grandchildren, Audrey Laura Nehlsen, Elise Noelle Nehlsen, Simon Elliott Lane Nehlsen, two sisters, Vina Chapman and Nancy Salyer both of Lebanon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Herman and Kenneth Calmes and one sister, Gertrude Calmes. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22nd at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. John Porter will officiate. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the Miami Cemetery near Waynesville, Ohio. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Care Hospice, P. O. Box 123, Wilmington, Ohio or to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420. The Turner & Son Funeral Home is serving the family.
